NAC SPONSORED EVENTS

The Northport Arts Coalition and NAC artist Anthony Davis are planning a Plein Air painting event in Northport village. Selected artists will be invited to paint throughout the village of Northport on June 15 and 16, inspired by the beautiful scenery. On June 17, there will be a silent auction at LaMantia Gallery on Main Street. LaMantia Gallery has graciously donated space to help our, not for profit, arts coalition. This event will take place rain or shine.  If you are interested in participating,  look for our guidelines and application form.  It will be posted on the NAC website  www.northportarts.org  after March 16th. OPERA NIGHT  

Opera Night in Northport has become an increasingly popular event,  for semiprofessional opera singers who are given the rare opportunity of singing for their peers and for audiences who flock to the monthly event to hear Long Island's finest voices.  Opera Night takes place the first Friday's of the month, at 8 p.m. Come down March 2nd at St. Paul's Methodist Church, 270 Main St., Northport. $5 suggested donation. NAC WEDNESDAYS

 

The NORTHPORT OPERA COMPANY will perform Operatic Signatures: Lessons in Love from Verdi, Mozart, Puccini, Mascagni, Bizet & Massene, as well as scenes from Carmen, Manon, Tosca, and more on March 14 at 7:00 p.m. at the Northport Public Library, 151 Laurel Ave., Northport.  Northport Opera Company invites the community to meet its newest member, Tenor Anthony Daino.   Mr. Daino has been described by Allan Kozinn of The New York Times as having “an appealing tone, perfect diction and an ear for nuance.”  He frequently appears both in lead roles and in concert with opera companies in the US and Europe.  Upcoming engagements include tenor soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Newburg Symphony Orchestra, Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly, and Fenton in Falstaff in New York City.  For additional information about the performance contact northportopera@yahoo.com 

 

 

VILLAGE HALL ART SHOW

 A DEFINITION OF EXCELLENCE, the latest exhibit in the series, is a juried show of selected works by Margaret Minardi’s 11th and 12th grade Advanced Placement Art students at Northport High.  The show will be on view at the Northport Village Hall, 224 Main St., Northport, through April 27.  Exhibit hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.   For additional information call (631) 757-3230.

 

NORTHPORT READER’S THEATER

- ACTORS - No Auditions! No Rehearsals! POETS IN PORT

 Friday March 23, 7:30 p.m. at Caffe Portofino, 249 Main St., Northport.  Featured author will be Steven Post.  Enjoy an evening of poetry reading, in a café environment, with fellow poets, friends, and poetry lovers. HAPPENINGS ON MAIN STREET

Happenings on Main Street is back for the 9th year of musical happenings in beautiful downtown Northport.  The Northport Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that the 2007 New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Re-grant panels have again awarded Happenings on Main Street funding support for 2007.  The funding is administered through the Huntington Arts Council, Inc., which received more than 70 applications from all over Suffolk County representing various art disciplines and geographic areas.  The Happenings on Main Street project was one of only 43 applicants funded for 2007.

 

Happenings on Main Street takes place at the edge of the park near the dock in the historic village of Northport every Friday evening from May 25 through August 31.  From 7 to 8:30 pm hear live the sounds of jazz, swing, funk and traditional music performed by a talented array of musicians, singers and songwriters.   These free summertime events presented by the Northport Chamber of Commerce and the Northport Arts Coalition are sponsored in part by a Huntington Arts Council decentralization grant.  The time is right for the entire family to enjoy an early evening picnic under the trees.  Bring your blankets and chairs.

Township Theatre Group will be casting actors for their upcoming play Cactus Flower, directed by Sally Zwiebach, at Five Towns College, 305 North LIE Service Road, Dix Hills (LIE exit 50 North) on Monday March 19th, and Tuesday March 20th at 8:00PM. There is 1 male and 1 female lead role in 20’s, and 1 male and 1 female lead role in 40’s. Other roles are age optional (no children). All roles are open. Performance dates will be June 1, 2, 3, 8 & 9 2007. A number of opportunities also exist for those interested in building and painting sets, as well as other backstage activities. THEATER

 Kevin O’Neill and his partner Richard T. Dolce look forward to opening of The John W. RIDOTTO, Concerts "with a Touch of Theatre", presents “Le Portrait”.  This joyous program of French music takes its name from the love song The Portrait by Francis Poulenc. Portraits of love and longing, visions of people and places left behind long ago. Among the pieces on the program are “Tableaux de Provence” by Paule Maurice for saxophone and piano; “Sonnerie” by Erik Satie for two trumpets, Songs by Poulenc and Ravel, music for solo piano by Debussy, and scenes from the film: Les Enfants du Paradis (Children of Paradise) by Michel Carne, 1945. Performers are: distinguished pianist Doris Anne McMullen, soprano Arlene Travis with pianist Yegor Shevtsov, and saxophonist Michael Ibrahim.

The Walt Whitman  Birthplace offers a poetry/prose  contest inspired by images  from the photographic series Miracles by Pauline  Southard.  The contest accepts both poetry and  prose, and is open to entrants age 15 and up. Contest entries  may be submitted from February 28 through March 31,  2007. Prizes of up to $100 in value will be awarded.  Winners will receive their prizes and read their work on April  22nd, 2007 at 1:30 pm at the Walt Whitman Birthplace in Huntington,NY.
