NAC PROGRAMS START THE MONTH OF OCTOBER WITH REMARKABLE PERFORMANCES AT THE NORTHPORT LIBRARY AT 7:30 P.M.

 

October 1, 2004, (Friday) 7:30 p.m. Do-ing Music, a program featuring clarinetist Gene Keyes and pianist Isabella Eredita performing a re-creation of an historic recital presented during the lifetime of the composers  Brahms ( Sonatas, Opus 120) and Schumann ( Fantasie pieces, Opus 73.)

 

October 13, 2004, (Wednesday) 7:00 p.m.   We will hold our monthly meeting at the Northport Library Community Room where elections will take place in the gallery area. All members are eligible to vote.  Following a short meeting the following program will take place in the community room:

 

Enjoy The Beat Goes On. Celebrating Jack Kerouac and David Amram's first jazz/Poetry readings in NYC in 1957, featuring David  Amram & Friends co-hosted by Kate Kelly & George Wallace

 

October 8th, (Friday) at 8:00 pm  - NAC Night at the Opera

Cafe Portofino, Main Street, Northport (Opposite Northport Post Office) Open to singers and audience. Bring Music.

 

NAC's populaDO-ING MUSIC concert series will feature the Canta Libre Chamber Ensemble Fri. November  5th, 2004 7:30 p.m. at the Northport Library. This unique ensemble of accomplished musicians consist of harp, strings, flute and clarinet and will play an ambitious program which will include The Handel Harp Concerto, French romantic era pieces of Ropartz, Ravel and Roussel, as well as Jolivet and Berlioz.  Meet the artists reception and refreshments immediately following.     Call the Library at 261-6930 for free advance tickets.  They are also performing on Sunday, October 17 in Garden City. Northport Village Art Show, “Rebuilding our Future: Life after Nine Eleven.”  exploring how America, Northport, and/or the individual have moved on since nine/eleven. Exhibition opens to all.   Organized by Elaine Stein and curated by Doris Rowe. Now on display through November at the Village Hall.

 October 8th (Friday) from 7:30pm to 11pm songwriter and poet Alan Semerdjian will host and perform at the next installment of The Conklin Barn Singer/Songwriter Series..  This unique event takes place on the second Friday of every month and features some of the most talented songwriters on the island doing two short sets of music acoustically in a relaxed and intimate historic space.  In addition to Alan, this month's performers are Dave Diamond (Zen Tricksters, Pozzy Ghuru), Carol Thomas (One and Twenty), and Sean Llewellyn (The Bel Airs).  For past performers at this event and other information on Alan Semerdjian, see www.alanarts.com.   The Conklin Barn is located at 2 High Street and New York Avenue, two lights south of Main Street.  There is a $5 suggested donation.  The Conklin Barn Singer/Songwriter Showcase is an all ages event.

October 9  (Saturday) CATHY Kreeger AND HER BAND, WHAT IT IZ WILL BE AT CODA IN HUNTINGTON

 

October  9 (Saturday)  and Nov. 13 Glenn Baldwin & Friends of Jazz having played the final performance for Happenings on Main Street on September 3, will be featured at Sweetwater’s, Rt. 111, Hauppauge,  and at the Mills Pond House on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 3:00 p.m. This jazz ensemble --including trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, drums, and vocals--delivers swing, bossa, bop, and blues in an easy-to-listen style.

October15 (Friday) The First Presbyterian Church of Northport (Church at Main Street) announces their 6th annual Choral Festival Weekend for October 15-17.  Guest conductor Marguerite Brooks comes from the Yale Sacred Institute of Music in New Haven, CT.

The Sunday October 17th concert at 4 pm will feature the music of Hogan, Hatfield, Dorsey, Bach, Handel, and Tompkins in the church sanctuary.

October 16 (Saturday) 8:00 p.m. - the Folk Music Society of Huntington is presenting guitarist and songwriter Bob Westcott and jazz chanteuse Marty Winkler for the Hard Luck Cafe coffeehouse concert series. held at the Congregational Church of Huntington, 30 Washington Dr., Centerport. October 20 (Wednesday)  College Night for Long Island Music Student  
The annual College Night for Long Island Music Students will take place this year on Wednesday, October 20th 2004 from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at Kings Park High School, 200 Route 25A, Kings Park.
Music Students grades 9-12 (and transfer students) who wish to continue music study as an undergraduate are invited to attend. Parents are also welcome or to attend in their place if students have a conflict.   Students interested in classical, jazz or contemporary music, opera, musical theater, conducting, composition, music business, music technology, music and communications, etc., will find this event helpful.
Representatives from local, statewide and national conservatories, colleges and universities will be available to answer questions on applications, auditions, requirements, courses, and college life. October 21 – (Thursday) at 8PM, the Inter-Media Art Center at 370 New York Ave., Huntington will present an important concert, ‘LOCAL ARTISTS DESERVING WIDER RECOGNITION’, featuring three of Long Island’s notable musical acts. The evening promises to appeal to fans of all stripes, especially those who appreciate outstanding musicianship and intelligent songwriting.  MARTHA TRACHTENBERG and TOM GRIFFITH have been making beautiful music together and separately for quite some time. MARTHA was a founding member of the first all-female Bluegrass band, the Buffalo Gals. Her songs have been covered by IBMA award-winners.

 

THEATER

 

October 21st (Thursday) NAC members Charlotte Koons and Ghislaine Grillo will be offering ROOTS & WINGS: A dramatic Arts Experience for students 12 to 16 years of age 8 Thursdays, 5 to 6:30 pm. Posey School, 57 Main St. Northport.  Charlotte will 'root' the students in basic theater exercises, games, improv, monologues, scripted scenes and Ghislaine will give them their 'wings' of improvisational dance.  For information and registration, contact msPosey@optonline.net

 

October 23 – (Saturday), Northport Performing Arts Center (NPAC) will be presenting a benefit at a sponsor's home. October 31, Jerome Vivona, PAC’s Artistic Director, and other NPAC staff members will be judging a children’s' Halloween Costume Parade in the Park.  The Parade is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce as part of their Halloween Celebration in the Village.

 

DANCE

October 16 - On Saturday at 12 midday a group of intergenerational dancers will be “Gathering in the Harvest” on the lawn outside the museum at Heckscher Park in Huntington. Free. October 20 to 23 -Posey School’s dance faculty members Allison Smith, Elyssa Vanderpool and Elsa Posey will be attending the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) conference at the University of Michigan in East Lansing. A student scholarship fund has been established in recognition of NDEO’s Past President, Elsa Posey, “a mentor who always had faith in our ability to educate, to research, to build bridges across the sectors, and to reach our destiny in the field of dance education. Elsa has unsparingly shared her experiences and insights and supported our efforts in the field.” The Elsa Posey Student Scholarship Fund can accept further donations for information contact the national office of NDEO at 301-657-2880.

 

VISUAL ARTS

October 2 – (Saturday), The 7th Annual Fundraising Gala will be held at the Marshall Field Dairy Complex on the grounds of the park, and will feature an auction for all donated artwork.  

Incorporating the Caumsett State Historic Park in her artwork, Pamela Nolan has donated her newest piece titled, "His Majesty, King of Caumsett, 2004", to the Caumsett Foundation. Rendered in pastel on 100% rag, the painting was inspired by the flora and fauna of the beautiful park.  The painting can be viewed on Pam's website at www.pamelalongnolan.com Tickets for the Gala can be purchased by contacting The Caumsett Foundation at (631) 367-8062

 

October 910  Mary Ahern will be showing her Fine Art Botanicals at the Westhampton Beach Arts & Crafts Show. This show is held in conjunction with the Westhampton Beach Fall Harvest Festival.  The Heckscher Museum of Huntington NY is now carrying her Frameable Note Cards in their Gift Shop.

 

October 17- Kate Kelly will be exhibiting her newest work in a solo show

"Contemplations & Migrations" at Memorial Gallery located in Nathan Hale Hall on the campus of Farmingdale State University of NY, located in Farmingdale.  The opening reception will be held on Sunday at 2:30 pm and the work will be on display through November 12, 2004. Kate is one of four artists in a show titled "Metamorphosis" curated by William Grabowski for the Huntington Arts Council's satellite gallery, Art-trium. The show runs through November 15, 2004. The Art-trium is located at 25 Melville Park Road (off Rte.110, just south of the LIE).

 

NAC member Jane McGraw Teubner won the Harbor House Award for outstanding seascapes at the 39th Annual Gallery North Outdoor Show.
