Subject: NAC NEWS SEPTEMBER From: Pat Bond Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2003 16:02:55 NORTHPORT ARTS COALITION NEWS SEPTEMBER 2003 August has been one of our busiest months!! The Summer has culminated with "Art, Music and Poetry in the Park" on August 10th. Thank-you to all artists and performing artists who participated. We covered the spectrum from classical to rock, contemporary poetry to Shakespeare, an aria sung in French to Goethe narrated in German!!! We did it all. Thank-you to Tara Kavanagh for organizing this highly successful event! The "Happenings on Main Street," a collaborative series with the Northport Chamber of Commerce continues and will present is final concert on Friday, August 29th. Thank-you to Jackie Rose for all her efforts in organizing and setting up these events. Ranny Reeve, Jazz Pianist (and friends) had a large crowd of audience members hopping and swinging to the great Jazz standards on Wednesday, August 13th. We look forward to future concerts. Northport Library to Host Songwriters Concert The Northport Arts Coalition will present "A Four Square Round" at the Northport Public Library on Wednesday, September 10, 2003. Dave Isaacs, Judith Zweiman, Tom Griffith, and Martha Trachtenberg are four of the most highly-acclaimed songwriters on Long Island; in this Nashville-style "round", the four artists will take turns performing and discussing the inspirations and meanings behind their works. The "round" format also affords the opportunity for these accomplished instrumentalists to accompany and enhance each others compositions, often spontaneously. Dave Isaacs is best-known locally as the frontman for the popular country-rock band Jackalope Junction; his new solo recording " Prodigal Son" is beginning to earn national acclaim. Judith Zweiman is a veteran of New Yorks folk scene and is one-half of nautical duo Strike The Bell, artists-in-residence at the Long Island Maritime Museum. Tom Griffith has written and recorded countless jingles and remains an in-demand composer, session musician, and producer. Martha Trachtenberg was a founding member of the first all-female bluegrass band Buffalo Gals, and has performed and recorded with such luminaries as newgrass banjo innovator Tony Trischka and mandolin virtuoso (and Grand Ole Opry member) Marty Stuart. The Northport Arts Coalition is a group of mostly, though not exclusively, Northport residents whose common vision is to create a vibrant hub in the community for the Arts and Humanities. For more information about the Northport Arts Coalition or about the Four Square Round songwriters concert, visit www.northportarts.org.
